Maoists’ landmine kills CRPF jawan

GAYA: Maoists triggered landmine blasts in Chakharbandha forest area under the Dumaria police station in Gaya district on Sunday morning when CRPF personnel were conducting a special operation there. One CRPF jawan, Sanjay Sharma, died in the incident.

Reports reaching the divisional headquarters said that as the CRPF personnel conducting the operation reached the place of occurrence on motorcycles and anti-landmine vehicles, the Maoists triggered landmine blasts injuring more than half a dozen CRPF personnel, one of whom later succumbed to his injuries. Two of the seriously-injured were admitted to Anugrah Narain Magadh Medical College Hospital (ANMMCH), Gaya, while four others with minor injuries were admitted to the Imamganj primary health centre.

According to the ANMMCH superintendent Sita Ram, the two CRPF men admitted to the hospital were stable and out of danger.

Maoists rang up some media persons later in the morning to claim that they had also torched two police vans and eight motorbikes used by the CRPF personnel.

Confirming the landmine blasts, CRPF DIG Umesh Kumar said an encounter between the Maoists and the security forces followed the landmine blasts and reinforcement was immediately sent to rein in the Maoists. The two sides exchanged intermittent fire for several hours.

Asked about the Maoist claim that they had torched vehicles, the CRPF DIG said that some damage was caused to a few vehicles and bikes due to the landmine blast, but the vehicles were not torched as claimed by the Maoists. Torching implies taking possession of the vehicles which was certainly not done, maintained the CRPF DIG.

Earlier, city SP Babu Ram claimed that two Maoists were killed in the encounter that followed the landmine blasts under the Dumaria police station area. However, the police claim was not substantiated by the recovery of bodies and their identification till the time of reporting.
